Rock401 Back Up.

July 23rd, 2009

The Rock401 stream has been down for several days now.  Our previous streaming provider seems to have disappeared off the face of the Internet.  We’ve just signed up with a new provider, and we have a new streaming flash player as well.  Check it out!

Shoutcast.com recently released a Shoutcast application for the iPhone and iPod Touch.  More information on the application can be found at the SHOUTcast.com blog.  The best news about this application is that it is a FREE way to listen to Rock401 on-the-go.

You can download the application directly from the iTunes App Store, or by doing a search for SHOUTcast.

By default, the SHOUTcast Radio application does not support high-bitrate streams of 128k (which Rock401 streams at).  However, it’s very easy to enable this feature after you have installed the application on your iPhone/iPod Touch .  The directions from the SHOUTcast blog:

1. Tap on the “Settings” icon from your home screen
2. Flick down to the “SHOUTcast” settings. Tap on the “SHOUTcast” Menu
3. Tap the switch for “Allow hi-bit streams” to ON
4. Exit out of the Settings screen by tapping on your Home button and return to the SHOUTcast App

You should now be able to play high quality SHOUTcast Radio streams over 3G or WiFi.

To “tune” into Rock401 using the SHOUTcast Radio player do the following:

1. Open the SHOUTcast Radio application on your iPhone or iPod Touch
2. Click on the “Search” icon on the bottom right.
3. In the search text box, type in “Rock401″.  Click on the Rock401 result – it will bring you back to the main screen.
4. Press play to begin listening to Rock401.
5. Click on the star on the top right of the screen to add Rock401 as a favorite for easy reference in the future.

In preliminary testing, Rock401 sounds great over Wi-Fi.  If your iPhone is 3G enabled, you should also get good performance in good coverage areas.  If you have an older iPhone that is only EDGE enabled, you won’t have much luck – we’re looking to resolve this with a lower bitrate stream in the future.

Listen to Rock401 with the SHOUTcast Radio Player.

Rock401 SHOUTcast Radio web player

Rock401 SHOUTcast Radio web player

I’ve discovered another option for listening to Rock401 in your web browser.  You can now listen to Rock401 using the SHOUTcast Radio Player.  The player offers track information, and a window for artist photo/bio information.  You can access the Rock401 SHOUTcast Radio page here:  http://shoutcastradio.rock401.com.

The SHOUTcast Radio web player has a lot more features than the one I provide on the Listen page here at Rock401, so I encourage you to use it if you’re limited to web browser access only.

One word of warning – because it’s hosted on SHOUTcast.com and not on Rock401, you may be subject to ads.  I personally have not seen or heard any, but I use Firefox and Safari with AdBlock Plus installed.  I apologize in advance if you get the occasional ad if you run your browser without some type of ad-blocker.
